lost in translation
sometimes there's nothing to write about, and other times it just all comes down on me in one huge avalanche of ideas.
guess I'll just write about the film for now.
just finished watching Lost In Translation on my laptop. Now I really feel like watching it on the big screen. Or at least on DVD. Argh.
a BBC article described it as a 'gentle comedy'. Perfect.
the film has a very light, understated style. No big fireworks. No in-your-face action. No mind-blowing special effects. No fairytale ending. Just a short love story, simply but subtly told.
what it does have is a lot of silence and fades, creating such an effective atmosphere that you can palpably feel the insecurity and world-weariness of the characters. Yet there are quite a few chuckle moments, so it never really gets overwhelmed by sadness. There's no outright funny gags, but there is quite a bit of wry humour.
it's definitely not a conventional comedy.
japan looks so amazing in it.
(and so does scarlett johansson.)
now if only I can figure out what bill murray said at the end...
