national day

a film is worth watching if it manages to provoke a meaningful discussion. And no, debates about the size of an actress' boobs are not defined as 'meaningful'.

by these admittedly-simple standards, 'the return' was definitely worth the $8.50 ticket. I didn't have high hopes for it, but I was pleasantly surprised. The plot, whilst overtly simple - long-lost father appears, brings sons to fishing trip - is enriched by the unfolding complexities of the father-son relationships. Humour, tension, heartwarming comfort and bitter irony are evoked as the story unfolds. Add some beautifully-shot scenes into the mix (some of the panning was terrific), and I was left thoroughly satisfied with what I saw.

by and large, that was the high point of national day. Other supposed highlights turned out to be anti-climaxes: wanted to catch fireworks, but view was obscured by inconvieniently-placed hotels; and wanted to try the fondue at haagen-dazs, but they'd (horror of horrors) run out of chocolate. SIGH.

on the whole though, it was a happy day today. It's easy to be happy when I think about how mundane my worries are, and how things could very easily be a whole lot worse. At the end of the day, staying in s'pore has quite a lot going for it. Heh.

happy national day to all.
